Elizabeth, if "the mechanics" are people working in a machine shop generally fixing cars, the in Italian they are called "I Meccanici (plural), Il Meccanico (singular)" if the person is a female we can use "Il Meccanico" as well (in this case male gender is actually neutral). You can also use "La Meccanica" (female) although seldom used. Plural is good always "I meccanici" for either males or females or both together.

On the other hand, "The mechanics" = "I meccanismi" for example "the mechanics of a decision", "i meccanismi di una decisione". IN this case Mechanics does not mean people fixing cars but processes.

Hope I was clear

Giovanni Maria was very clear, when I wrote "Le meccaniche" I was thinking at this word like in the sentence "the mechanics of a decision". Bye!

Hi Elizabeth! Literally "Le meccaniche", but maybe I can be more precise if you write me in what sentence you want to use it! :)

The mechanics are in the shop. Le meccaniche sono nel negozio, si o no?

But what if the mechanics are both male and female?

grazie dell'aiuto... :))
