"Cosa" can be translated as
"What"
[ In direct and indirect interrogative sentences and
exclamatory sentences ]
or
"Thing"
or
"Matter"
But there are other meanings too, such as "Something" / "Anything" [ In this case, "Cosa" is used as "Qualcosa", which is a compund form of "Cosa" ] or "Which".
"Che" can be used next to "Cosa", when it means "What" or "Which".
e.g.:
"(Che) cosa vuoi?" = "What do you want?"
"Ho un paio di cose da fare" = "I’ve got a couple of things to do"
"Dimmi una cosa" = "Tell me something"
"È stato licenziato, cosa che non sapevo" = "He was fired, which I didn’t know"
"Non è una cosa da ridere" = "It isn't a laughing matter"
If you need more examples, just ask. ;)
