The past participle is the adjective form of a verb. It is similar to the ~ed form of a verb in English when used to desribe nouns.

Below is an example with the verb apirere (to open):

   Il libro aperto
   The opened book

Also, it is used with the verb avere (to have) to form a variety of compound tenses as well as use the passive voice.

   Hai mangiato?
   Have you eaten?
