Similar to the gerund form, this is also equivalent to ~ing form of a verb in English when used as an adjective. (The gerund is used as an adverb.)
In the example below cantare is used to describe la ragazza (the girl):
La ragazza cantante.
The singing girl.
Note however that not all verbs have an present participle that is used.
